The Kia Rio has been awarded top prize in its category by the JD Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality Study (IQS).
JD Power's annual report, which measures 217 vehicle attributes in eight categories, such as driving, engine, transmission and a host of quality issues, found the Kia Rio to be the superior car for initial quality in the sub-compact category, being given a rating of 137 problems per 100 cars.
Kia's all-new 2006 Rio sedan and its Rio5 5-door have taken the market by storm with their class-leading break horsepower, interior volume, and six standard airbags, including full-length side-curtain airbags.
Furthermore, the Rio and Rio5 have been fitted with longer wheelbases and increased width and height, helping to deliver the largest interior space in their classes.
Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KKia Motors America, said: "Rio is a class-leading subcompact vehicle and an excellent example of Kia's continued dedication to offering consumers an affordable vehicle without sacrificing quality.
"We're extremely pleased that the automotive industry and consumers alike recognise Rio's high level of excellence."
Meanwhile, the 2006 version of the Kia Sedona minivan also performed well in the survey in its first years since release, while the Sportage compacy SUV scored more highly than the industry average.
