Kia Rio named as Australia's cheapest to run car
The Kia Rio has been named as the cheapest car to run in Australia in the 2006 Vehicle Operating Costs survey.Carried out by the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia (RAA), the survey revealed that the Kia Rio cost an average of A$117.50 per week to run, four per cent cheaper than its nearest rival in the Light Car class.
The survey suggested that owners of a Kia Rio who travel an average of 15,000km a year will save more than A$250 than if they had purchased the Rio's nearest competitor.
While enjoying greater fuel economy than many other vehicles, it also has one of the most powerful engines in its class.
The five door, 1.6-litre Rio produces an average combined EU consumption of just 6.5L/100km, taking it 44 miles per gallon.
This is the second international survey that found Kia has the lowest operating costs. In 2005 a survey by the German automobile association ADAC revealed that the Rio was cheaper to run than any other car.
John Keenan, general manager for Kia Motors New Zealand, said: "The fact that two quite different markets both found the Rio to be the least costly vehicle to own is important."
However, low operating costs do not mean that the Kia Rio's drivability has been compromised. The car recently topped he JD Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) in the US.
