Kia Rio Hybrid 'part of wave of green motors'

Kia has displayed the new Rio Hybrid at the Geneva motor show as it seeks to underline its green credentials.

The Kia Rio Hybrid, which debuted at the event, combines a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and can reportedly manage 53 miles per gallon, reports icLiverpool.

Meanwhile, it also boasts a clever fuel-saving device that automatically switches off the engine if a car remains stationary for a few seconds, which could come in handy during the long wait for the lights to change.

The vehicle was one of several green cars on display at the motor show, as rival automakers vied to be recognised as the most eco-friendly car maker around.

Steve Hughes, an automotive journalist, said that he believed there were two reasons for the change in direction shown by many car makers.

"The success of the impending drive towards environmentally-friendly forms of personal transport is two-fold – with genuinely impressive and practical technology now perfected and a willingness among motorists to embrace it," he said.

Recently, Land Rover revealed that it would be contributing towards green projects in China and Tajikistan as part of a programme to offset CO2 emissions created during production of new vehicles.
