Hyundai Motor America posted record sales in July having sold nearly 50,000 units.
The Korean manufacturer said that in the month of July it sold some 47,205 vehicles, beating the one-month record set in June.
Hyundai said that July sales grew by 6.2 per cent over July last year, meaning that sales in 2006 are thus far some 4.6 per cent higher than in 2005.
The 2006 Sonata remains Hyundai's most popular model, with sales up by 43.7 per cent, closely followed by the fuel-efficient Elantra, which is enjoying particularly strong sales growth on high petrol prices.
Mark Barnes, vice president of national sales at Hyundai Motor America, said: "The second half of 2006 has started off strong.
"With another record-setting month, we're continuing the sales momentum established in the first half of the year."
As a result of this robust performance Hyundai has managed to breach the three per cent market share threshold for the first time.
The Korean firm now controls a 3.2 per cent share of the US automotive market, having grown by 0.23 per cent from June. The group controlled a two per cent share in 2001 and a one per cent market share in 1999.
"There will be a fierce competition for the sixth place between Hyundai and Nissan which captured 5.8 per cent of the market," the Korea Times quoted a Hyundai spokesman as saying.
