Youngsters 'should go for small models'
Before heading down to their local Ford or Volkswagen dealership to buy their first car, young motorists have been urged to think small. The British Insurance Brokers' Association said people who have just passed their test are better off with a less powerful vehicle.
It explained inexperienced drivers are more likely to have an accident if they are behind the wheel of a model with a big engine.
The organisation stated for the first few years new motorists would be well-advised to concentrate on building up their no claims bonus, adding this is much easier in a small car.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services, commented: "If you're learning to driver you don't need a powerful car, you need to understand the road."
Newly-qualified motorists who follow this advice and opt for a vehicle with a small engine may also find they qualify for cheaper insurance premiums in the first place.
