Scrappage scheme 'has helped cut country's carbon footprint'
Whether they are buying new autos from Fiat or Ford car dealerships, scrappage scheme participants are tending to make environmentally-friendly choices, it has been suggested.According to WhatGreenCar, although eco factors were not the main motivation behind introducing the cash for bangers initiative, the programme is helping the country cut its carbon footprint.
Figures from the group show a typical vehicle being scrapped releases 179 g/km of CO2.
In comparison, the new motors people are driving away in boast average CO2 emissions of 134 g/km.
Dr Ben Lane from WhatGreenCar claimed people were starting to look for smaller, more fuel-efficient autos even before the government initiative was launched in May.
He added: "The scrappage scheme has helped to continue this trend, at a time when UK car sales were at an all time low."
Meanwhile, WhatGreenCar's website offers eco ratings for all the new and used autos available in the UK.
