Ford aims to get edge on the green market

Ford announced today the launch of a new hybrid car that runs on a combination of a hydrogen fuel cell and a battery that can be recharged from the mains, as it seeks to plug into the growing eco-friendly car market.

Coming as President George Bush called on Americans to use less petrol in his State of the Union address, Ford showcased the Edge at the Washington DC Auto Show.

According to Inside Line, the fully-charged prototype car can run 25 miles just on electricity, with the fuel cell switching on once 60 per cent of battery capacity has gone, enabling it to run a further 200 miles.

As yet the Edge is not about to hit the streets, with the company explaining that there were some technical issues to overcome before it could be sold on the open market.

"Commercialisation remains a tantalising but distant goal," said the vice president of environmental and safety engineering at Ford, Sue Cischke.
