Car buyers 'will turn to smaller models'
Whether they opt for a Ford or a Citroen model, a significant number of car buyers will downsize this year, it has been suggested.Which Car? has predicted a key trend of 2009 will see motorists swapping larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles for motors which can help them save money at the pump and reduce their carbon footprint.
The consumer group pointed out fewer people are driving 4x4s because it is becoming socially unacceptable to use such high-polluting vehicles in urban areas.
Editor of Which Car? Richard Headland said smaller cars make sense in the current economic climate.
He stated: "Times are hard, so it's no surprise that people are downsizing to save money."
Mr Headland added: "Luxury cars and 4x4s could be in for a rough ride."
As well as saving money at the pump, motorists who downsize may find they also reduce the amount they spend on road tax and insurance.
