Ford Mondeo brings "intuitive" mobile phone layout to the dashboard

The Ford Mondeo's dashboard design has been lifted from the humble mobile phone to make it easier for owners to make calls and change music tracks, it has been revealed.

In what the automaker claims is a first in the large car sector, the Ford Mondeo will feature a new menu-based accessibility system that features four directional keys around the central 'OK' function.

Entitled the Ford Human Machine Interface, the design is intended to simplify the process of controlling incoming phone calls, accessing cruise control functions and altering track volume.

Commenting on the system, Dr Stefan Becker, supervisor at Ford, said it provided an "intuitive pathway" for drivers.

"If you were to get into the new Mondeo having never driven the car, you can answer a Bluetooth-connected phone, set the speed or change the music," he explained.

Many motorists have already been given a sneak peak of the new Mondeo in action.

Last year, the model was driven on screen during the most recent James Bond film Casino Royale.
