Ford Focus Sync is a "killer app"

The speech-recognition facility to be offered on the new Focus is a "killer app", according to a Ford spokesman.

Jim Cain has made the comments in regard to the new Ford Sync program, which has been developed alongside Microsoft and is set to be rolled out on the new Focus, reports Bloomberg.

And outlining the potential uses of the system, Mr Cain has indicated that owners will be able to order songs while in the driving seat or instruct an mp3 player to change tracks.

Rebecca Lindland, automotive analyst at business intelligence specialist Global Insight, has explained that Ford's new device is designed to cater for the changing tastes of supermini buyers.

"Small cars were historically bought because they were economical," she said.

"The latest compacts and subcompacts tend to have sexy features like Bluetooth … cars have to be iPod-friendly and cellphone-friendly".

In related news, Ford of Britain's chairman and managing director Roelant de Waard indicated earlier this month that the company's prospects in the second half of 2007 are "really exciting".
