Scrappage extension 'would help car dealerships'
An extension to the scrappage scheme would help a lot of vehicle retailers - from Fiat to Ford car dealerships - it has been suggested.The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed it has written a letter to the business secretary, Lord Peter Mandelson, asking that additional funds be made available so the initiative can be sustained.
It said the programme has proved hugely successful and has helped to slow the decline in car production.
Chief executive Paul Everitt claimed ensuring people are still buying autos is critical to the health of the economy.
He added: "An extension to the scrappage incentive scheme, which has already proven its credentials as a cost-effective support mechanism, will ensure a more stable outlook for vehicle demand."
Meanwhile, What Car? magazine has also claimed increased funding for the cash for bangers initiative would be a step in the right direction and could help ensure autos are affordable for more motorists.
