Report: Fiat to exceed 2006 expectations

Automotive manufacturer Fiat is exceeding its selling targets this year as it prepares for the launch of new Bravo and Cinquecento models in early 2007, according to its chairman.

In July, the group said that it anticipated a net profit for the whole of 2006 of approximately €800 million (£540 million), before consideration of one-off gains.

And speaking before a celebration of the Lancia vehicle's 100th anniversary, Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told Reuters that the company is continuing to prove popular in the automotive market.

"Fiat's industrial plan is showing results that are above expectations [and] we expect an important performance for the end of 2006," he said.

Since 1986, Fiat has also been the parent company for fellow manufacturer Alfa Romeo, which is set to celebrate its own 100th anniversary next year.

In answer to queries about vehicle sales for this company, Mr Montezemolo added: "Alfa Romeo is also going well, as we saw from the August figures."
