Independent garages 'should support code'

Whether motorists go to Ford or Fiat dealerships to buy their cars, they all want value for money when they take that vehicle to a garage, it has been suggested.

Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas said the fact many people are having to tighten their belts at the moment means it is even more crucial for businesses carrying out servicing and repairs to charge reasonable prices and look after customers.

He stated: "It's particularly important during the economic downturn that consumers are reassured they're getting a good deal."

The government representative said firms could do this by signing up to the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair.

In particular, Mr Thomas called for more independent companies to demonstrate their support for the scheme.

The initiative was launched in 2008 to help motorists identify garages committed to offering excellent customer service.

Meanwhile, the group behind the industry guidelines recently called for feedback from people who have used businesses that have signed up to the scheme.
