Government unveils road safety strategy

All motorists - whether they drive a Ford or a Fiat - may benefit from new road safety measures unveiled by the government today.

The country's leaders have developed a ten-year strategy in a bid to cut traffic fatalities by a third and make Britain's highways the safest in the world by 2020.

In addition to reassessing speed limits, the Department for Transport has also announced plans to improve methods of driver learning and testing.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick explained: "The major changes to the driver training and testing process will create better prepared drivers while our plans for the next ten years aim to make the roads and vehicles they use safer."

He said the government was determined to meet its targets as eight people being killed each days in traffic accidents is unacceptable.

Earlier this month, the Department for Transport announced new powers meant drivers caught committing motoring offences - regardless of their country of residence - would face equivalent punishments.
