Fiat thrives as 'motorists downsize'
Fiat is reaping the rewards as motorists downsize to save money in the current gloomy economic climate, the manufacturer has claimed.The group revealed it shifted some 9,818 cars last month in the UK - its best result for four years.
In contrast, the Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders announced earlier this week overall sales had decreased by 21.2 per cent last month, compared with the same period in 2007.
However, Fiat bucked the trend with a 56.6 per cent increase in the number of cars bought, giving the carmaker a three per cent market share.
Managing director Andrew Humberstone said the company's success could be attributed in part to the fact it specialises in small vehicles and many people are downsizing in an attempt to save money.
Looking ahead, he stated: "We expect the fourth quarter to be challenging but, that said, we believe we are positioned to face these challenges."
Meanwhile, Fiat recently announced an eco-friendly Panda had arrived in showrooms across Britain.
