Fiat to replace Stilo with Bravo

Fiat has announced that it is to ditch the Stilo nametag when the replacement for the model goes into production at the end of 2006.

The Italian car giant said that it is replacing its current Stilo with a new model, but rather than retain the current name it is harking back to the past.

German media reported that Fiat is to rename the Stilo the Bravo, the outgoing model's predecessor that was in production between 1995 and 2001.

In a sign that Fiat has major ambitions for the Bravo, the Italian manufacturer has employed former Ferrari designer Frank Stephenson, who was responsible for the styling of the Ferrari F430 and Maserati MC12, to design the model.

The Bravo is expected to be a serious rival to the popular VW Golf when it goes into production at the end of the year, while its underpinning will be used for the successor to the Alfa 147 and a new compact model from Lancia.

Meanwhile, Fiat boosted its share of the European car market to 7.8 per cent in May 2006 from 5.5 per cent the year before.

In an expected result the group produced its strongest performance in the domestic Italian market, although other European markets also performed strongly, thanks to high sales of the new Grand Punto and the group's Alfa Romeo and Lancia brands.
