Scrappage scheme 'should boost car sales'

The introduction of the scrappage scheme next week could see a significant increase in the number of car buyers pouring through dealerships' doors, it has been suggested.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the automotive sector is expecting the initiative to have a positive effect on new car registrations.

The past 11 months have seen sales of the latest models fall.

Chief executive of SMMT Paul Everitt said: "There has been a good response to the scheme ahead of the official start date and [the] industry is confident that this will be translated into additional orders."

The programme kicks off on Monday 18th May and to be eligible motorists need to own a vehicle that is a minimum of ten years old.

Participants will also need to have proof they have owned the model that is to be scrapped for at least 12 months.

Earlier this week, Fiat announced it would be selling its Grande Punto 1.4 Active three-door for £6,695 under the scheme.
