Fiat Croma for young families

Fiat's Croma can only be described as a cross over car. Not big enough to be a family model and not small enough to be in the same league as the Ford Focus, the car is sort of a cross between the Vauxhall Vectra and the Mondeo.

Looks wise the car tends to lean towards the MPV side of things however, the space inside allows for increased visibility and high roof means larger glass areas for better vision.

The drivers eye line is high and there is enough leg room for four pro basketball players on the inside. Luggage space is also huge with 500 litres with the rear seats up or 1610 litres if the seats are folded down.

The floor of the rear also can be mounted at the level of the rear bumper creating a space to hide valuables out of public view.

Safety wise the list goes on, with seven air bags, ABS, EBD, electro-hydraulic power steering, air-conditioning, remote tailgate opening, a cool box in the centre console and traction control. The cool box isn't exactly a safety feature but it could save mum and dad a lot of hassle on long trips and keeping juice and bottles cold.

The engine choice is between a 147 bhp 2.2 litre-petrol engine and two versions of the 1.9-litre multijet turbo diesel, an eight-valve 120 bhp version and a 16-valve and 150 bhp version.

The car handles well although sometimes there can be a little body movement.

Prices start from £15,745 for the 2.2 Dynamic and reach just over £20,000 for the 150 bhp Multijet Prestigio with automatic transmission.

The Croma is a definite star in the young family vehicle arena.
