Citroen C6 awarded top marks for pedestrian protection
The Citroen C6 has become the first car to achieve the maximum rating for pedestrian protection in New Zealand. In the latest crash test results released by Land Transport NZ and the AA Citroen's popular C6 model achieved a four star rating for pedestrian protection, the highest score possible.
John White, vehicles manager of Land Transport NZ, said that a number of vehicles have recently scored three out of four stars for pedestrian protection, suggesting that manufacturers are beginning to design cars with the safety of all road-users as a key consideration.
Pedestrian tests were conducted using a series of tests replicating collisions with both adult and child pedestrians at a speed of 40km/h to ascertain likely injuries in a collision.
The single most important dimension of the C6's pedestrian safety measures is the advanced system by which the bonnet is elevated once an impact is detected, keeping pedestrians away from the solid engine block responsible for the majority of fatalities and serious injuries.
Meanwhile, the C6 also scored five out of five stars for occupant safety, which Mr White claimed illustrated "that driver and passenger safety doesn't have to come at the expense of those outside the vehicle".
Collision tests were conducted under the European EuroNCAP calculate occupant protection ratings and the Australian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP), replicating a frontal crash at 64 km/h, a side impact test at 50 km/h, and an optional pole test under which the vehicle strikes a pole lined up with the driver's head at a speed of 29km/h.
