Citroen has announced it is extending its C8 people carrier range with the introduction of two new fuel-efficient Euro IV compliant diesel engines.
At present over 80 per cent of Citroen C8s sold in the UK are equipped with diesel engines and the French manufacturer claims that the new additions combine sub-190g/km CO2 emissions with a frugal fuel economy.
As a result the two new cars are subject to lower taxation than more polluting vehicles, while environmentalists are sure to appreciate the fact that both can run on 30 per cent bio-diesel.
On the combined cycle the 136hp 2.0HDi 16V unit delivers 40mpg, with CO2 emissions of 188g/km, with a Diesel Particulate Filter System to reduce particle emissions to negligible levels
Producing a top speed of 118mph and 236 lb per foot of torque, the 136hp 2.0HDi 16V has been designed as a replacement for the 130hp 2.2HDi unit.
However, the new 120hp 2.0HDi 16V model produces even better fuel economy, achieving 41mpg on the combined cycle with with CO2 emissions of just 182 g/km.
Capable of 112mph, the new engine delivers 221 lb per foot of torque at just 2,000rpm, replacing the current 110hp 2.0HDi 16V version, which will be retained as automatic only.
Priced at £18,000 for the 120hp 2.0HDi 16V LX and £20,025 for the 136hp 2.0HDi 16V SX, customers who buy during August can take advantage of Citroen's £3,000 cashback offer.
The Citroen C8 was the first large MPV to achieve a five-star rating for occupant protection, largely as a result of its wide range of safety measures, including ABS with EBD and EBA, ESP with traction control and six airbags.
