Citroen has announced details of its newest engine for the C5 model, which is due to enter market at some point in 2007. Despite being just 2.2 litres in size, the French manufacturer's new twin turbo diesel engine boasts 125 kW and 370 Nm of torque, delivering superb performance. Citroen said it has added a parallel sequential dual turbo, which is a world first on a four-cylinder engine, and is designed to improve engine response at low speeds. The new C5 can travel one kilometre from a standing start in 29.8 seconds for the hatchback and 30 seconds for the estate version. Only one turbocharger is operational below 2,700 rpm, nevertheless delivering instant engine response and as much as 40 per cent more torque than the current engine. Once engine speed exceeds 2,700 rpm the second turbocharger kicks in, with the engine spinning it up before plugging it into the air take system, delivering instant power and a smooth change to twin turbo operation. Furthermore, the new C5 engine is 40mm shorter than the previous model, removing hard spots in the bonnet and making considerably safer for pedestrians. Prices for the new C5 HDi Twin Turbo will be announced when it goes on sale, which is expected to be at some point in early 2007.
