The Citroen C5 has the lowest emissions of any new family car currently available in the UK, according to a new government website.
The Department for Transport (DfT) launched the website today to help environment-conscious car buyers to compare the emissions of new vehicles.
Results, which were compiled with help from What Car? magazine, are divided into 14 categories, each of which has its own top ten chart.
The 139 g/km of CO2 emitted by the 1.6HDi 16v version of the Citroen C5 makes it the top performer in the family car category, while eight of the French manufacturer's other models also made the leading ten in their sections.
An overall top ten of the lowest emission new cars on the market included the 1.0i and 1.4HDi versions of the Citroen C1 supermini.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the transport minister, said he hoped the website would encourage drivers to join in the battle against climate change, while also helping them to reduce their motoring costs.
"By choosing the car with the most fuel efficient engine in its class, drivers could reduce their engine CO2 emissions by 24 per cent and potentially save a quarter on fuel costs," explained Mr Fitzpatrick.
