Citroen voted manufacturer of the year by green campaigners

Citroen has been voted car manufacturer of the year at an awards ceremony to raise awareness of green vehicles, which may attract environmentally-conscious drivers towards the marquee.

The automaker received the distinction at the GreenFleet Awards 2006, following a decision by panellists drawn from the Institute of Car Fleet Management, GreenFleet magazine and the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, reports Easier.

Citroen has developed several innovations for its car range to boost appeal among ethical drivers.

For instance, C3s fitted with the company's Stop & Start technology automatically switch off the engine when the vehicle is stationary.

However, the engine restarts when the driver puts pressure onto the accelerator, meaning that the car only releases emissions when it is actually moving.

Earlier this week, Citroen announced that it would be exhibiting its new C4 Picasso at the forthcoming MPH motor show in Birmingham and London.

Among the design innovations, the model reputedly boasts 30 in-car light sources to assist activities such as map reading.
