Citroen has begun production of its first diesel electric hybrid prototype as part of the government's Ultra Low Carbon Challenge. The new hybrid is based on the Citroen Berlingo Multispace and follows the diesel-electric C4 and 307 prototypes presented earlier this year. Produced in partnership with consultancies Ricardo and QinetiQ, the hybrid Berlingo represents a 30 per cent improvement on a conventional diesel Berlingo, producing just 99g/km of carbon dioxide, travelling 75mpg. Featuring the PSA 1.6 HDI turbodiesel engine and a 23kW electric motor, delivering up to 95lb foot of torque, the Berlingo hybrid also comes with a five-speed automated manual gearbox. Furthermore, the full-hybrid can run in electricity only mode at low speeds without having to recharge as the motor draws on power produced through regenerative braking. Alain Klein, the director of hybrid vehicles development at PSA Peugeot-Citroen, said: "We are delighted with the results from this research project, which demonstrates the potential for a step change in C02 emissions reduction with a diesel parallel hybrid. "The challenge now is for the motor industry and its suppliers to achieve the cost reductions required for the mass production of diesel hybrids."
