Chevrolet to resurrect Camaro

Chevrolet is to resurrect its iconic Camaro model as a production car, the US automotive giant has announced.

Since unveiling its 400-bhp concept model at the North American International Auto Show in January this year the industry has been alive with speculation that the Camaro would be making a comeback.

Rick Wagoner, chairman of General Motors, is expected to announce the latest incarnation of the muscle car in a speech at an automotive conference in Minnesota this Thursday.

Coming at a time when SUV sales are slipping into decline while car sales are booming, General Motors (GM) are anticipating that the new Camaro will capitalise on demand for American sports cars.

Coming with a choice of three engines, either a V-6 or two V-8 options, according to people familiar with the plans, the new Camaro could be built as early as 2008.

The new model will be based on the new Zeta global design for rear-wheel drive vehicles, which is expected to set the standard for sedans and coupes over the coming years.

Steve Harris, a spokesman for GM, refused to comment on plans for the Camaro, although the Free Press reported other sources confirmed the GM boards had approved plans.

Introduced in 1966 to compete with the Ford Mustang, the Chevroley Camaro was one of the US's most popular performance cars until production ended in 2002.
