IAM offers advice on dealing with tailgaters

Motorists who have visited any car retailer from a Citroen to a Chevrolet dealership to buy an auto over the past few months may find recent advice can help them protect their new set of wheels.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has urged drivers not to respond aggressively to tailgaters.

It issued this recommendation after AA research found having the vehicle behind driving too close was considered to be the most annoying habit on the road.

According to IAM, people should not attempt to deter tailgaters by slamming on the brakes.

It stated it was a good idea instead for drivers to remove themselves from the situation as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the group suggested: "Find the earliest opportunity to change lanes in safety and allow the tailgater to get past you and become somebody else's problem."

The organisation added motorists should always attempt to leave a two-second gap between them and the vehicle in front.
