Car owners urged to be cautious about increasing excess

Whether drivers own a Citroen or a Chevrolet, increasing the excess on their insurance beyond a manageable limit could be a mistake, it has been suggested.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) made this claim in light of research it carried out that showed an increasing number of people were looking at ways to cut the cost of cover.

Of those brokers that took part in the survey, some 16 per cent said they had experienced a rise in customers bumping up their excess to reduce their premiums.

Biba accepted doing so could save motorists money initially, but it pointed out it could turn out to be a false economy in the end.

Graeme Trudgill, the group's technical and corporate affairs executive, explained: "In the long run people do have claims, that's why insurers exist and some people are going to find a hefty bill if they are going for a big excess."
