New Chevrolet Lacetti praised

The forthcoming diesel-powered Chevrolet Lacetti should prove a cost-effective purchase, according to a motoring preview.

Writing in the Mirror, automotive journalist Richard Hammond notes that the new two-litre model, which will be the first Chevrolet car powered by a turbodiesel engine, is expected to operate at 55.8 miles per gallon.

"There's no denying cars like the Lacetti offer very good value for money," he wrote. "The new diesel is bound to be particularly popular."

The new model is expected to reach Chevrolet car dealerships in the early part of 2007.

Mr Hammond is famously nicknamed "the Hamster" by Jeremy Clarkson, his co-presenter on the BBC's flagship automotive programme Top Gear.

While filming for the show earlier this summer, he hit the headlines when he was involved in a life-threatening crash after losing control of a dragster.

However, Mr Hammond recovered from his injuries in a medical intensive care unit and has now resumed his former motor journalism roles.
