Peugeot 2008 Review

If you like superminis, but you’ve outgrown the Peugeot 208, then the Peugeot 2008 is your next best bet, says motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay.

Kids

Presumably, like me, just because you have children doesn’t mean to say you’ve outgrown wanting a nice car to drive? Luckily, the 2008 means you don’t have to go green with envy when you see young free and single types burning around in their fun Peugeot 208 supermini.

Entertaining

The Peugeot 2008 SUV may look more conservative than the sporty 208, but it’s still just as entertaining. It’s got the same tiny steering wheel – and this gives you a feeling of sportiness the moment you’re sitting in the driver’s seat.

Power & Efficiency

I drove the frugal 1.6 BlueHDi diesel 2008 with the highest 120PS power output, in mid-range Allure trim. This blend of power and efficiency means you can still drive actively when you want to – yet you’ll still get good mpg. Zero to 62mph can be achieved in 9.6 seconds and the top speed is 119mph. An average of 76.3mpg is possible if you drive without a heavy right foot.

Shudder & Shake

The Peugeot 2008 doesn’t always handle rutted and scarred road surfaces that well. The cabin does shudder and shake when the wheels meet this kind of terrain, but it’s not a deal-breaker because the car’s many strong points outshine this weakness.

Agile

For instance, the Peugeot 2008 is a pro when it comes to snaking along twisty busy city streets. Its agile nature, nice six-speed manual transmission and effortless steering make light work of this sort of environment. All this, plus good visibility and rear parking sensors on the Allure trim, makes parking in tight spaces easy, too. On faster roads, the 2008 is just as competent, sitting happily at 70mph all day long. Yes, there’s a bit of noise intrusion from tyre roar and wind howl around the wing mirrors, but the car’s fine sound system soon sorts this out.

Infotainment

Music from either DAB, Bluetooth or USB inputs plays via the 2008’s infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink are also available if you have a smartphone. The unit comprises a seven-inch colour touchscreen that is crystal clear. It’s intuitive to use, as well.

Classy

Peugeot has certainly made the cabin feel classy with the inclusion of decent kit, comfortable seating and materials. Even the plastics on the dash and around the doors are good to touch – and a smattering of chrome-look trim adds a bit of French flair.

Practical

Space-wise, the Peugeot 2008 will seat a family of four. There is a lot of room up front, and plenty of space for two or three kids on booster seats in the rear. Leave the children at home, and two adults will find leg and headroom is fine for them, too. It’s not the widest car, though, so you might find yourself brushing shoulders with your passenger if he or she has been lifting too many weights at the gym.

Load Space

The 2008’s boot size is not to be sniffed at. The 360-litre load area will swallow a tot’s buggy and the kids’ school bags – as well as the weekly shop. Lifting stuff into the boot isn’t back-breaking work, either, thanks to the square aperture and the flat boot floor.

Verdict

So, if you’re a parent after a sporty-ish, classy, efficient, yet practical car – why not go for the Peugeot 2008?  The SUV will also suit business users – especially the 1.6 BlueHDi version, as tested here. At 96g/km, this variant emits the least carbon dioxide out of the entire 2008 line-up. Furthermore, now could be a good time to purchase a Peugeot 2008. Its Grip Control system, standard on the 1.6 BlueHDi 120 Allure, and other higher up the range models, improves traction in wintry weather conditions. While slip is reduced, the excellent fuel efficiency and performance of this French car is never compromised.
