Eco-motoring is not only good for the planet, but also an improvement for people financially.

This is according to HPI, which believes that high fuel prices, busy roads and the recent tax changes have all led to environmentally-friendly driving being a good option for motorists.

CO2 emissions have become the focus of tax after it was introduced in April this year that people will have their vehicle excise duty worked out based on the gases released by their car.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager for the organisation, recommends individuals consider the HPI CO2 Certificate when looking at which motor to buy because the product has government tax brandings.

So, anyone buying a used car may need to have a good think about the type of driving they will be doing.

She added: "They should be thinking about what size of engine is really necessary and whether they drive short distances in town or longer journeys on the open road. This will affect the type of fuel vehicle buyers choose, as well as affecting the long-term motoring costs."

Those who are particularly concerned about their carbon footprint might like to opt for an electric car due to their zero emissions at point of use. These options can be cheaper to run than other eco-motoring choices and people will not have to pay any road tax or congestion charges.

Earlier this month, Andy Carroll, managing director at Glass's - which produces a guide to vehicle values - noted that the amount of new electric cars sold could outweigh the used ones traded in 2015.

Hybrid motors might also be a vehicle that is worth considering, according to HPI, because they have the best of both worlds in terms of being part conventional motor and part battery-electric.
