As more and more news of green vehicle innovations are released each day, some may be keen to note that the government is making "very good" progress in terms of its policies on electric cars.

This is according to Dr Ben Lane, director of WhatGreenCar.com, who pointed out that the main aspect of this development is the Plug-in Car Grant, which will be available for consumers in January and enables electric motor buyers an allowance of up to £5,000.

Purchasers of plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-fuelled vehicles will also be able to get their hands on some of the money, although it all depends on various conditions, such as cars meeting appropriate safety standards and they also need to be crash tested.

In addition, they must comply with a minimum performance range and criteria.

Dr Lane said: "For the first time, the government is seriously tackling the purchase barriers and the grant is likely to make a significant difference.

"That said, the government could always do more, certainly on education for consumers."

One of the ways in which ministers could improve this service is by ensuring there are more electric cars available for the public to drive, possibly at a test drive centre network, Dr Lane observed.

"A lot of the new technology is very different to conventional cars and only by trying do you understand what their benefits are," he stated.

He noted that thanks to initiatives like the Plug-in Car Grant, as well as the amount of high-quality electric cars being produced, it is the best opportunity of the last 30 years for there to be a noteworthy uptake of this type of motor.

But no-one is too sure what is going to happen exactly, with people watching to see whether the latest models will be enough to ensure individuals take up the chance to switch to a more greener-style of vehicle.
