It is important to have a labelling system that can help consumers differentiate between the number of choices available on the market as they are ever increasing.

It is important to have a labelling system that can help consumers differentiate between the number of choices available on the market as they are ever increasing.

This is according to Daniel Burgess, automotive director for HPI - which has been promoting its CO2 certificate, a document that highlights the level of emissions that a vehicle produces.

It uses the industry standard emissions chart to do this and Mr Burgess noted that it helps dealers to assist motorists when they are trying to make the correct vehicle choice.

And the certificate also complies with Best Practice Principles - which have been announced by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP), the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers - designed to enable dealers to show green car purchasers exactly what they are buying.

Consumers should be able to receive easy access to information they need to make informed decisions when it comes to choosing a green car.

Many aspects of marketing are covered, such as advertising pictures and wording regarding the low-carbon vehicles.

Mr Burgess said: "The launch of these principles is an encouraging step in ensuring the motor industry offers clear information on emissions and low carbon features.

"We support any measure that helps dealers empower the consumer in making low carbon purchases, as HPI continues to champion the need for best practice and clear, honest marketing."

Earlier this year, HPI introduced its CO2 certificate - recommended by the LowCVP - which can calculate the amount of vehicle excise duty that the consumer has to pay and can also estimate fuel costs over 12,000 miles.

Mr Burgess noted that the green tool is great for dealers and the document should come in handy as consumer choice is vital to the reduction of road transport emissions.
