This is the level of CO2 emissions that half of the Peugeot cars sold in Europe fall below.

The company believes it is at the forefront of the industry in terms of making "continuous improvements to the efficiency of naturally aspirated engines".

It produced its first electric car in 1941 – the Peugeot VLV – which was released onto the streets of Paris complete with an electric motor.

Moreover, the manufacturer is currently celebrating its 200th year which it says has been marked by revolution, evolution and innovation.

And it plans to become more pioneering in Autumn 2010 with the launch of a new electric vehicle – the Peugeot iOn, which releases zero emissions when it is driven.

The four-door motor has a range of up to 80 miles and can be charged at a user's home or at a specific charging station and the producer describes the process as being "quick and easy".

From a household mains plug, the electric vehicle should be charged up in six hours, according to Peugeot, but it can be much more powerful to give the battery a quick fix at a service terminal which can achieve an 80 per cent boost in 30 minutes.

It noted the car should allow people to respect the environment, as well as enjoy personal mobility.

Similar models set to be released by the manufacturer include a rechargeable plug-in 3008 HYbrid that will come out in 2012 and should produce 50 g/km of CO2 emissions, the producer has stated.

But next year it is set to launch the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, which will produce 35 per cent less CO2 than a diesel engine and offer "great driving flexibility with optional four wheel drive".

The manufacturer has stated that the motor will emit 109 g/km of CO2 in the combined cycle, which will be zero in the electric only mode.
