That is how much the British government is hoping to put towards the development of electronic vehicle (EV) technology to increase the number of eco-friendly cars in the UK.

To help with this goal the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT's) Electric Vehicle Group (EVG) has now been joined by a new member after Mondial Assistance added its services to try to put its motor industry knowledge to good use.

An increase of hybrid and plug-in electric cars is what the SMMT hopes to achieve, including reaching the government's target of there being 100,000 electric motors in use in London as soon as possible. It wants the UK to be the leading country for the development of EV technology.

Lee Taylor, automotive director for Mondial Assistance, said the EVG would play a "key" role in the future of the motoring industry and he hopes the initiative will increase awareness among its members.

He added: "We continue to explore how we can develop our range of assistance, warranty and CRM solutions alongside the needs of both manufacturers and motorists."

The group's aim is to become an electric car "expert", which includes helping out with solutions for the charging process in an "exciting period" for the implementation of the new green car technology.

Mr Taylor: "By 2020, electric vehicles will be a prominent part of the UK's roads and motor industry."

This news comes after HPI introduced a scheme last month to help dealers to ensure consumers are making greener car choices when they purchase vehicles.

For every HPI check it offers a motor information organisation's certificate, which is recommended by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership. Some of its uses include recording the amount of CO2 emissions that a vehicle produces, done using the industry ratings chart.
