Last night the hugely popular TV motoring entertainment show, Top Gear, started again this time for its 20th series. For the first episode of this new series, the Top Gear crew decided to introduce a new car to be used for the show's regular feature called 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car'.

The segment sees celebrities drive on the Top Gear test track to set their fastest lap possible, driving a family hatchback which can be considered 'reasonably priced'.

Cars previously used for this segment in the show have included the Suzuki Liana, the Chevrolet Lacetti and more recently the Kia Cee'd (or as Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson referred to it the 'Cee"apostrophe"D').

Prior the start of yesterday's episode there was speculation as to what could become the newest reasonably priced car for Top Gear. Rumours suggested cars including the Chevrolet Cruze and the Dacia Sandero could become the new wheels of choice.

Yesterday though revealed that the Vauxhall Astra Techline is the new choice for the 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' segment.

The five-door hatchback used is specifically a mid-range Tech Line-trim model with an 115bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, and it sports a red paintjob. Currently the Astra Tech Line model is priced new from £16,540.

The current-generation Astra was given a proper introduction as several celebrity guests were gathered to set their fastest pace around the Top Gear test track, thus getting the first names on the lap time board.

The first celebrities shown to get behind the wheel of the new reasonably priced Astra yesterday included Brian Johnson, David Haye, Joss Stone, Jimmy Carr, Warren Davies and Rachel Riley.

Vauxhall are likely to welcome Top Gear's choice of the Astra as their new Reasonably Priced Car, as other manufacturers in the past have reportedly benefitted in terms of exposure and sales because of the TV show's coverage.

With an estimated 350 million views in 170 different countries per week, Top Gear is currently one of the most popular TV shows in the world. The Vauxhall Astra is well placed to benefit from the worldwide global exposure it will garner by regularly featuring in the show's Reasonably Priced car segment.
