Mazda has officially started the production of its new CX-5 compact crossover and the first models are set to arrive in the next few months.

Mazda's CX-5 compact crossover has been a long awaited spectacle, but is now in production and on its way to release.

Designed as a small SUV with a hatchback rear end, the Mazda CX-5 will sit below the larger Mazda CX-7 in the brand's SUV range.

The new Mazda CX-5 will feature Mazda's new Kodo body language first displayed on the well-received Shinari supercar concept. However, the main draw for buyers is expected to be its new Skyactiv technology.

While the Kodo design language creates a more aerodynamic shape, the Skyactiv technology improves engine and gearbox options to boost fuel economy.

The Skyactiv technology is a combination of new engine and body technology and makes the CX-5 eight per cent lighter than its previous model. It also adds better and more responsive handling on the road, according to Mazda.

New Skyactiv engines on the CX-5 include a1.3-litre Skyactiv-G, a 2.2-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. The 1.3-litre engine is expected to deliver sub 120g/km CO2 emissions. This technology is also backed up with stop & start technology.

As the CX-5 is a compact crossover it will face stiff competition with the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and Ford Kuga, although these models don't offer a whole new revamp in terms of technology. The CX-5 is expected to start at around £21,000 when it arrives at UK dealerships.

Mazda vehicles are available from Perry's dealerships, such as Barnsley and Huddersfield.
