A Peugeot green car is the world's first diesel hybrid, according to the manufacturer.

The Peugeot 3008 Crossover, which is capable of achieving 74.4 mpg and emitting just 99 g/km of CO2, has been unveiled by the producer.

The company noted that the model - which is powered by a two-litre 163 bhp HDi diesel engine and a 37bhp electric motor - is writing a new chapter in vehicle history.

It features a Zero Emission Vehicle mode, which enables access to an all-electric option that turns the green Peugeot car into a "city run-around par excellence" as there is a total absence of noise and emissions, the manufacturer noted.

And it stated that the motor is "designed to appeal to demanding, technophile customers who are in search of a rewarding and original vehicle".

There is a sport mode which enables gear changes to be quicker compared to the normal option and in the former there is a notion of controlled power, which pairs the diesel engine with the electric motor resulting in a more "dynamic performance".

But potential Peugeot green car purchasers may be more interested to note that the vehicle comes with second-generation Stop and Start technology and its hybrid power train couples the HDi engine with an electric motor.

The brand noted that with "their exceptional efficiency, HDi diesel engines are thermodynamically more efficient than a petrol engine and offer a 30 per cent reduction in fuel consumption. Clearly the HDi diesel engine is the best internal combustion engine choice".

Earlier this year, the manufacturer noted it made its Peugeot 3008 green car range more environmentally-friendly and powerful than its predecessor by implementing a HDi diesel engine.

And the company pointed out that the vehicle had particularly low fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels, compared to its competitors at the time.
