Ford's market lead this year up to the end of April has improved thanks to some of its green cars.

The manufacturer has produced its "best ever production line" in recent times, which has included the new Ford S-MAX and the latest Ford Mondeo model which comes with a powertrain capability to improve its fuel economy.

This has helped increase overall sales to 27,824 - more than 6,488 compared to the same period last year.

Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain managing director, said: "Ford's continuing stream of new model introductions, incorporating our low CO2 technology, suits the current market conditions. We are working hard with our dealers to make customers aware of the outstanding value provided by these technically advanced and stylish vehicles."

One of Ford's green cars - the S-MAX - has contributed to this gain. There is a "commitment to the future" with the seven-seater, according to the producer, in that it should impact less on the environment.

The motor comes with an energy-efficient Ford EcoBoost SCTi turbocharged petrol engine, which has a broader spread of torque and high power. It has a best mpg of 34.9 on the combined cycle and a fuel consumption of 8.1 l/100 km. Its CO2 emissions are 189 g/km as a result – a reduction of 20 per cent.

The implementation of the Ford Mondeo with its powertrain changes to the manufacturer's fleet has also been a contributory factor to the rise of the company's market share.

And this means the vehicle has an improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, as well as a better performance on the road because of the Ford EcoBoost petrol-injection turbo and upgraded Ford Duratorq TDCi diesel engines.

In addition, the two-litre 163PS Ford Duratorq engine means the green Ford car has an "impressive" fuel economy and with the Ford Powershift it can achieve a best mpg of 50.4.
