An agreement between Renault and Milton Keynes Council has been made to set out a road map for the production of electric cars and infrastructure in the borough.

This is in order to help the area move to the forefront of green car production, as earlier this year the council managed to secure a £30 million funding for its plugged-in-places scheme which should help build the charging points.

The idea was launched in November last year by the Department of Transport to create power plug sockets across the country – between three and six cities – so that people are able to charge their electric cars easily.

But the agreement set out today – signed at the Milton Keynes Theatre – will see the council implement 430 electric car charging points at various locations around the city.

These will be placed around the city – in various private and public locations – and there will also be around 2,000 points for homes.

People who are unsure about switching to using an electric car could be encouraged by news that they will be able to receive incentives, such as free parking at the posts in the city centre and not having to pay any money to charge their vehicle.

Roland Bouchara, Renault UK's managing director, said it was excited to be a part of the project and to be working with Milton Keynes Council.

He added it "presents a great opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of our range of electric vehicles in a realistic environment and is a significant step towards our goal of bringing affordable electric mobility to the mass market".

Milton Keynes Council's chief executive David Hill said he was "delighted" to give people of Milton Keynes the chance to be at the forefront in the use of more environmentally-friendly cars.

"We have always been a pioneer for green technologies and initiatives and this agreement is yet another positive step for Milton Keynes as a showcase low carbon city," he remarked.
