The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) has accredited Jaguar with having a green car.

And the new lightweight Jaguar XJ model, which was analysed by the environmental credentials organisation, has an aluminium body that has used up to 50 per cent recycled material with plans to increase it to 75 per cent, according to the manufacturer.

The company is now one of the few vehicle producers to have had a one of its green cars rubber stamped in terms of its environmental ability.

Tony Higgins, project leader for the XJ certification, said the producer is aiming to make its vehicles more energy efficient and the VCA qualification has assisted with that.

He added: "Detailed lifecycle assessment helps us understand more clearly the most effective ways of reducing each model's carbon footprint.

"Jaguar is committed to maintaining a leadership position in its approach to sustainability and the certification achieved for the new XJ model is an independent validation of the progress we have made."

Some of the factors that enabled the XJ to be accredited with the green car recognition incorporated an audit of each aspect of the lifecycle assessment on the motor.

This included vehicle performance and product development among other features and the integration of environmental aspects in Jaguar's design was also taken into consideration by the VCA.

A specified lifetime of 200,000 km was used to test the environmental credentials of the vehicle, which integrated transport during manufacturing.

Paul Markwick, chief executive of the certifiers, was delighted to award the company with the certificate and was particularly pleased seeing as environmental issues are "high on the business agenda".

Features on the motor – which comes with a six-speed automatic transmission - include 20-inch Kasuga alloy wheels, as well as a panoramic roof with electrically-operated blinds and a full-colour HD touchscreen with a navigation system.
