Citroen has updated one of its range of cars and improved its fuel efficiency in the process.

People who purchase a vehicle in the Citroen C5 range on the Saloon and Tourer trim that has a 1.6HDi 110hp engine should hopefully be improving their fuel economy after the manufacturer re-homologated the device.

It now has lower CO2 emissions and vehicle excise duty (VED) is free for the first year.

With the VTR and VTR+ Nav models on the urban cycle the engine can produce a best mpg of 44.1 compared to its previous rating of 42.8.

Further improvements have been made to the extra urban cycle because the motor is capable of doing 67.3mpg with it since the changes, compared with a previously amount of 61.4mpg – a fuel efficiency saving of 5.9mpg.

Whereas the CO2 emissions of the VTR and VTR+ Nav models was 140 g/km, it has now been cut to 130 g/km by the manufacturer and on the combined cycle the motor can do 56.5mpg, instead of a previous best of 53.3 mpg.

Thanks to Citroen's changes, the vehicle is now in VED band D and there has been a one point deduction in BIK taxation rates, down to 18 per cent, which will mean company car drivers should reap the benefits.

But these are not the first green car changes that the manufacturer has announced in the past few weeks after it introduced the Airdream+ range to variants of its C3 Picasso and C4 Hatchback.

The new improved models with the Aidream+ function should now emit CO2 at a rate of between 99 g and 119 g/km and have a combined fuel economy of between 62.8mpg and 74.3mpg.

Moreover, the manufacturer remarked the changes showcase "Citroen's smart, green technologies, Airdream+ models feature fuel-efficient HDi engines, optimised gearbox technology and a focus on environmentally considerate engineering".
