Ford has admitted that is open to a green car partnership in the US, which could prompt the UK side of the company go into the electric car business by amalgamating.
But Bill Ford, the executive chairman, maintained the company would be stepping carefully before deciding on any form of partnership with another vehicle manufacturer in order to increase the production of eco-friendly cars, Reuters reported.
He added: "You always go into the joint venture with the premise that you will save money and save manpower, and our experience often has been that it does neither."
Mr Ford noted the organisation would need to thoroughly think through any possible business agreement and know exactly what it was the company wants to achieve by striking a deal.
However, the Ford company is going ahead with its electric car strategy, which will include an electric car version of its new Ford Focus vehicle in 2011 - the latest one available in the UK is the Focus ECOnetic, which uses technology to try to improve the fuel economy of the motor.
The innovative vehicle produces CO2 emissions as low as 99 g/km and the manufacturer stated it is one of the "most fuel efficient cars in its class".
It produces a best mpg of 74.2 on the combined cycle and there is even an alternative choice between the 90PS or 109PS models, which does slightly less for the environment by producing 104 g/km of CO2 and a best mpg of 70.6 on the combined cycle.
In March, the manufacturer was preparing to invest £1.5 billion in its four facilities for green research and production within the UK over the next five years after some financial help from the government, in the shape of a £360 million loan guarantee.
Joe Greenwell, chairman of Ford of Britain, said: "Ford welcomes this positive support from the Government. It greatly assists in delivering Ford's commitment to invest £1.5 billion in new, affordable, volume-produced low CO2 technologies."
