Elektromotive has been given the task of trying to kick-start the green car trade revolution in Ireland.

In locations around the country there are ten Elektrobay EV recharging posts installed, with the first three units already connected to the grid in Dublin earlier this week.

Electricity supplier ESB is also working with the recharging infrastructure provider to improve some eco-efficiency in the industry.

And targets have been made by the government which wants ten per cent of all the motors on the roads in the country to be electric cars by 2020.

The government plans to have more than 1,500 recharging stations installed by the end of 2011.

Moreover, the "simple to operate" Elektrobay debuted in Westminster, London in 2006 and there are now 300 other units around the UK – 135 in the capital and another 165 in places such as shopping centres, up and down the country.

Calvey Taylor-Haw, managing director of Brighton-based Elektromotive, said the company was "impressed" by the vision and drive of ESB and that Ireland is an important market for them.

He added: "The Irish government is setting an impressive standard for other European nations to follow in its drive for greener motoring and we are uniquely placed to deploy the required infrastructure."

In addition, Egton Medical Information Systems (EMIS) – a healthcare company - recently opted to use eco-friendly cars as part of the company's fleet.

Citroen C4 1.6HDi 90hp VTR hatchbacks were the chosen model for the majority of the business vehicles, which have an "exceptional" 64.2 mpg combined cycle fuel economy and a combined fuel efficiency of 115 g/km, according to the manufacturer.

However, not all of the fleet will be made up of that specific type of motor, because some will be Citroen C5 1.6HDi 110hp VTR saloons. EMIS – which has more than 300 cars from the manufacturer – keeps them for a four-year 100,000 mile service life.
