Italy's latest sporty stallion, the Alfa Romeo 159 is set to push German rival the BBMW 3-Series all the way, according to recent reports.
Released just a few weeks ago in right hand drive, despite existing on the continent for the last year in its left hand form, the 159 has taken over the job of tackling the BBMW 3-Series from its predecessor the 156 – and first impressions are that is more than up to the job.
Described as "sufficiently upmarket", superb to drive and looking "absolutely fantastic" by car reviewers, the unmistakeably Italian 159 has adopted an imposing stance in the market.
Solidly squaring up to the BBMW, the 159 with its tough shoulder line and trademark Alfa Romeo "frown" looks superb, but the car is not only about looking great.
With Alfa's new Premium platform underpinning the chassis, the 159 is stronger and has more space than the 156.
Inside, the uber-coolness of the upmarket design and slick Italian lettering make the cockpit a cleaner and more refined place to drive from.
The entry-level engine is the 1.9-litre (160bhp) unit, although the four-cylinder 2.2 JTS (180bhp) is also available from launch and a 3.2-litre V6 (260bhp) model with four-wheel-drive, badged Q4, is to be added to the range in the summer.
All in all, the Italian 159 is making itself known, and BBMW is eyeing it with caution.
