Italian marque defies recession

Alfa Romeo dealerships may have been as busy as ever over recent months - despite the recession - if new figures are anything to go by.

Last month, the manufacturer saw its new car sales increase by 76.8 per cent - 55 per cent more than its nearest rival, according to statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The group also enjoyed a rise in the number of units shifted in March.

In comparison, registrations for the auto industry as a whole are down 28.5 per cent compared with the same time last year.

Alfa Romeo attributes its success to the fact it now appeals to a wider market than in the past.

It claimed the Alfa MiTo has been key in achieving this by helping to make its cars affordable for more people.

Earlier this month, the group pointed out the model would be available to purchase for £8,995 under the government's vehicle scrappage incentive scheme.
