Alfa Romeo Spider 2.2 Convertible

It's been around since '96 but still manages to turn heads, such is the irresistibility of its looks. It also comes with a range of engines which add up to a typically Italian exercise in motoring passion.

The Spider has had a 2.0 litre engine since its launch. This was originally a Twin Spark (TS) unit with 150 bhp. When it was facelifted in 2003, this was replaced with a more modern 165 bhp JTS direct-injection petrol engine. The refined 3.0 V6 was introduced in 2001, but lasted only lasted until 2003, when it was replaced with a 3.2 V6. The 3.2 V6 is a pleasure to drive and listen to.

Front-wheel-drive makes for safe handling - it won't spin on a wet roundabout, and the quick steering is enjoyable too.
